Gillshaw Pottery: We first met Ashley (Howard) when we came across a seemingly impossible glazing issue. Ashley very kindly explored every possible avenue with us. This led to us asking if we could come and spend some time with Ashley to further our knowledge. After a couple of sessions, we asked Ashley if we were to give up our jobs and become ceramicists would he mentor and coach us through the process. Ashley now comes to our studio on a monthly basis and is on hand to answer quick questions over the phone. Our progress under Ashley is astonishing. He has that unique ability to not only be an inspirational ceramic artist but also an incredibly encouraging and enthusiastic teacher. Whenever we tell other ceramists that we study under Ashley, we always get a nod of approval. Alexander Baillieu, Gillshaw Pottery, www.gillshawpottery.co.uk I: @gillshawpottery

Ashley Howard demonstrating in China

Mary Wright Ceramics: I came to meet Ashley through a desire to push my ceramics practice forward, but with no experience of ceramics or art courses except for evening classes and the progress that I had made in my home studio. I think that he has been able to see what possibilities are available to me and has found ways to make them accessible. I have learnt to practice making brush marks on paper first, then on little models and finally on pots. Through articles and book suggestions, I have very much enjoyed learning about the history and cultural perspectives of ceramics. It has also been a privilege to watch Ashley demonstrate making pots relevant to our discussions. Further, he has helped to guide me through applying to larger events, and has always been patient, always approachable, supportive and enormously encouraging. I am sure that meeting with him has been instrumental in my progress so far. Mary Wright: https://www.marywrightceramics.co.uk/
